Data Science Undergraduate Academic Advisor - 138893

The Data Science Undergraduate Academic Advisor will support the multi-disciplinary undergraduate Data Science Program by providing academic advising, managing curriculum planning, and coordinating various departmental programs and events.
Responsibilities
- Participating in the short- and long-term planning for the degree program and the curriculum
- Academic advising
- Managing petitions and enrollment requests
- Student outreach
- Conducting degree checks
- Coordinating department programs and events
- Providing guidance to students, faculty, and campus partners on departmental academic regulations
- Evaluating transcripts of transfer students for course equivalencies and applicability to the Data Science degree requirements
- Providing advising for majors, minors, and double majors
- Initiating and following-through on various forms related to academic programs: petitions, grade changes, course approvals, minors, Education Abroad etc
- Initiating resolution on problematic petitions and forms
- Updating degree audits
- Working closely with the undergraduate colleges, Financial Aid and Scholarships Office, University Extension, International Center, Registrar's Office, Student Business Services and other academic departments
- Identifying students experiencing academic, emotional, financial, or personal difficulties
- Referring students to faculty advisors, undergraduate colleges, Counseling and Psychological Services, Office of Students with Disabilities, Career Services, Student Financial Aid, and other resources on campus as appropriate
- Participating in the development, planning and implementation of student outreach and retention events with industry
- Creating informational materials including departmental web pages or student communications
- Coordinating Triton Day Days, New Student Orientation, and student mixers
Skills
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques
- Proven experience in effectively counseling college student population to assist them in meeting educational, academic, and career goals
- Strong writing skills to independently compose correspondence, informational material, and web page content using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition, text editing, and proofreading skills
- Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills
- Ability to gather and synthesize large amounts of complex data to generate reports and make recommendations
- Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases
- Demonstrated skill in using standard and specialized office computer technology (email, database systems, spreadsheet, word processing and internet), and a commitment to regularly update and maintain technology skills
- Demonstrated record management experience
- Proven skill in developing and maintaining accurate, organized records, files and filing systems
