Our ideal candidate will be a dynamic driver for change and an experienced technical leader with a proven track record of success in data engineering and AI/ML platforms. The successful candidate will lead the day-to-day direction of the Cloud Data and AI Engineering teams, defining and enabling the BMO Cloud Data Platform, Data Lake, Data Visualization, Data Analytics, ML/AI Platform, MLOps, and Database management capabilities to drive innovation, modernization, and delivery of cutting-edge data and AI solutions at scale.

The team is tasked with developing patterns, architectures, and integration capabilities to enable and accelerate the Enterprise AI and Data Scientist community in delivering business value through advanced analytics and machine learning. You have a proven record of building, motivating, and energizing a diverse technical team tasked with delivering complex data and AI initiatives under tight timelines. You are a hands-on leader with a passion for continuous improvement and the ability to plan, prioritize, and structure the work of an agile team.

You are a strong advocate for operational excellence and have a passion for innovation, quality product delivery, and collaboration. Your extensive experience with data engineering, AI/ML platforms, and cloud services has equipped you to provide technical guidance and supervision to your team and contribute to the development of a multi-year product strategy for the portfolio of data and AI products under your management. The individual in this role will be expected to work collaboratively with all levels of leadership and promote a healthy work environment that fosters positive team alignment within T&O.

Responsibilities

Working with the Platform Engineering leadership to:
Manage and provide guidance to the team on the development of highly scalable, flexible, and resilient cloud data platforms, including data lake, data analytics, data visualization, and real-time streaming capabilities
Lead the design and implementation of enterprise AI/ML platforms, including model development environments, feature stores, model registry, MLOps pipelines, and model serving infrastructure
Drive the enablement of self-service data and AI capabilities for data scientists, analysts, and business users across the enterprise
Enhance the capacity of the Cloud Data and AI Engineering team through new hiring, coaching, training, and hands-on leadership while maintaining and fostering BMO Values
Create and maintain a work environment that promotes client service, teamwork, performance feedback, individual recognition, mutual respect, and employee satisfaction, ensuring quality hiring, training, and succession planning processes that encompass the company's diversity commitment
Oversee the day-to-day work of the Cloud Data and AI Engineering team, including product evaluation, deployment, pattern development and enhancement, service integration, code-driven automated service deployment, and product and best-practice documentation
Develop long- and short-term work plans for the Cloud Data and AI Engineering team to meet the goals set in the enterprise Cloud and Data Target Architecture
Provide consistent collaborative leadership with senior executives to help drive goals and objectives that will improve operational efficiencies and accelerate AI/ML adoption
Drive adherence to Agile methodologies, including playing a role of scrum lead
Establish and maintain data engineering standards, data governance practices, and AI/ML best practices for cloud environments
Partner with Enterprise Data Management, AI Center of Excellence, and business stakeholders to ensure alignment with enterprise data and AI strategy
Required Core Skills
At least 8 years of experience in a technical data engineering or AI/ML platform role in a large enterprise environment
Deep expertise in cloud data platform architecture, including ingestion, storage, processing, streaming, metadata management, and service layers
Strong knowledge of AI/ML platform engineering, including ML pipelines, feature engineering, model training infrastructure, MLOps, and model deployment patterns
Hands-on experience with modern data technologies such as Spark, Kafka, Databricks, Snowflake, or equivalent platforms
Experience with ML/AI frameworks and tools such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Kubeflow, MLflow, or similar technologies
Solid understanding of data visualization and analytics platforms (e.g.,  Power BI, Looker)
Experience leading development and support of enterprise data and AI capabilities and platforms
Strong understanding of Cloud Native Architecture, data mesh principles, and Infrastructure as Code
Solid knowledge of Cloud Computing, data security, data governance, and enterprise change management processes
Strong technical leadership skills, including coaching, team building, and conflict resolution
Experience implementing CI/CD systems, DataOps, and MLOps methodologies
Advanced communication skills catered to a wide variety of audiences (e.g., written, verbal, presentation)
A critical thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills and advanced multi-tasking and prioritization abilities
Ability to engage, lead, and drive vendors working closely with our Vendor Management function
Organizational and strategic management skills, including budget and business planning and forecasting
Advanced relationship management skills, including partnering and consulting with senior management and executive roles for internal and external partners
Extensive business acumen, technical knowledge, and industry experience encompassing data engineering, AI/ML platforms, and cloud product domains
Relevant certifications preferred (AWS/Azure/GCP Data or ML certifications, Databricks certifications, or equivalent)

Salary:

$150,700.00 - $261,800.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
