Trane Technologies has an exciting opportunity for a Lighting Design Engineer within Energy Services. This role supports the technical development of turnkey lighting and controls solutions for design-build and energy savings projects. Working closely with project developers, energy engineers, sales, sourcing, and operations, this position is responsible for converting audit findings, customer requirements, and building conditions into technically sound, energy-efficient, and execution-ready lighting system designs.
The Lighting Design Engineer supports the design and documentation process from concept development through turnover to operations. Responsibilities include lighting layout development, fixture and controls application, illumination and lighting power density calculations, technical documentation, submittal support, constructability review, and technical validation of the proposed solution. This role requires strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, collaboration skills, and the ability to balance design quality, energy performance, cost considerations, and execution practicality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Develop lighting and controls solutions for Energy Services opportunities using Trane and third-party technologies, as appropriate, to meet customer, project, and performance objectives
Support development of design concepts based on customer goals, audit findings, existing conditions, and project requirements
Utilize SnapCount by StreamLinx to develop detailed line-by-line retrofit solutions, maintain standardized solution catalog content, and support project development activities including audit data organization, solution selection, and proposal preparation. Perform lighting calculations, illumination analysis, and lighting power density evaluations using AGi32, Visual, DIALux, LightStanza, ElumTools, or similar software
Create and review lighting layouts, fixture schedules, control intent, and supporting design documentation in AutoCAD, Revit, or similar platforms
Support development of technical narratives, basis-of-design content, specifications, schedules, and system-level control requirements
Coordinate with project developers, sales, energy engineers, and operations teams to align technical design with cost, savings, scope, and constructability objectives
Research lighting products, controls technologies, and system application options to support solution development and standardization
Validate fixture, controls, and system selections for compatibility, performance, maintainability, and implementation readiness
Support energy savings assumptions and technical inputs used in project development, proposals, and internal reviews
Review audit outputs and field documentation for technical completeness and design applicability
Participate in technical review meetings, acquisition support efforts, and strategic project pursuit activities as needed
Support preparation and review of submittals, cut sheets, luminaire schedules, control documentation, and other project technical deliverables
Identify technical risks, design gaps, code issues, and constructability concerns early in the preconstruction process
Support project transition from technical development through turnover to operations
Help validate the effectiveness of design processes, technical tools, and solution development workflows and identify continuous improvement opportunities
Perform site visits, field verification, and project support activities as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
This role does not typically have direct supervisory responsibility, but it may provide technical guidance to project developers, audit resources, and other team members and may coordinate with external vendors, manufacturers, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
