Remote School-Based Sign Language Interpreter in California

Qualifications

- EIPA score of 3.5+ or higher (4.0+ preferred, depending on district requirements)

- RID certification preferred (NIC or equivalent)

- Active California licensure or credentials (if required)

- Minimum of 12 years of experience in educational or school-based interpreting (virtual experience a plus)

- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)

- Strong interpersonal, communication, and time-management skills

- Comfortable using virtual platforms and technology

Interpretation Services

- Provide real-time virtual interpretation for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in a classroom setting

- Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa during instruction and school-related activities

- Support communication access across academic subjects and school environments

Student & Classroom Support

- Facilitate clear and accurate communication between students, teachers, and peers

- Adapt interpreting style based on student needs, language level, and educational setting

- Support student independence while maintaining professional boundaries

Collaboration & Team Participation

- Work closely with teachers, DHH educators, and related service providers

- Participate in virtual IEP meetings and team discussions as needed

- Communicate effectively with staff regarding student needs and accommodations

Documentation & Compliance

- Maintain accurate records of services provided, if required by the district

- Follow all school, district, and state guidelines for interpreting services

- Adhere to confidentiality and professional ethical standards

Technology & Virtual Platforms

- Utilize virtual platforms to deliver high-quality remote interpreting services

- Ensure proper video, lighting, and positioning for clear visual communication

- Troubleshoot basic technical issues to maintain consistent service delivery

Advocacy & Professional Standards

- Advocate for effective communication access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students

- Follow the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct

- Maintain professionalism in all interactions with students, families, and staff
