As a Special Education Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the educational and personal growth of students with disabilities, helping them to achieve their full potential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers in meeting the needs of special education students, enhancing the educational process through instructional and non-instructional activities.
  • Work with students individually or in small groups to reinforce learning, develop basic life skills, and implement behavior modification plans.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and progress, while also observing and recording student performance.
  • Assist with daily activities, including lunch, transportation, and hygiene/toileting needs, ensuring student safety and well-being.
  • Sanitize classrooms and equipment using approved materials, maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, school staff, and parents, promoting a collaborative and supportive school community.

Essential Qualifications

To be eligible for this role, you must meet one of the following licensure requirements:

  • Current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL)
  • Current Illinois Substitute Teaching License
  • Current Illinois Educator License with Stipulations Endorsed-Paraprofessional Educator
  • Current Illinois Short Term Approval (STA) - Paraprofessional

If you do not already hold a teaching or substitute license, you may be eligible for licensure with:

  • An associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution
  • 60 semester hours of coursework from a regionally accredited institution
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, combined with a passing score on the ETS Parapro test or ACT WorkKeys Applied Math and Workplace Documents

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are highly valued:

  • Experience working with students with disabilities or special needs
  • Knowledge of child guidance principles, behavior management, and positive reinforcement techniques
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
