About the Staff Software Engineer Position:

We are seeking a highly experienced Staff Software Engineer to serve as a technical lead for one of our product groups. This role combines deep technical execution with team-level technical leadership — you'll be the engineering anchor for your team, driving technical direction, raising the quality bar, and helping your teammates deliver at their best. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to solve complex challenges, contribute to the technical roadmap, and directly impact the success of our platform and the supply chain industry.

At Stord, we believe in product-centered engineering — engineers who don't just build what they're told, but actively shape the future of our products through technical innovation and customer-focused thinking. As a Staff Engineer, you'll be expected to deeply understand your product area, challenge assumptions, and identify opportunities to move faster and build better.

This role will collaborate with the product development teams responsible for building, maintaining, and owning Stord's Order Management System (OMS), Transportation Management System (TMS), Warehouse Management System (WMS), and the Consumer Experience (CX) platform.

Why This Role is Great:
Engineering Anchor for a High-Impact Team: Be the technical heartbeat of a team building foundational software that directly drives company revenue.
Meaningful Technical Influence: Drive how the team works, what gets built, and how it gets built — with the support of Engineering leadership and a strong Principal Engineering community.
Pivotal Role in the Future of Software at Stord: This role directly shapes the technical direction and delivery quality of Stord's core product suite.
What You'll Do:

Technical Leadership:
Drive technical direction for your team, ensuring the team is building the right things the right way

Identify technical risks, surface tradeoffs, and push for decisions that hold up at scale

Influence roadmap priorities by bringing a strong technical perspective into product and planning conversations

Lead code reviews and set the quality bar for your team

Technical Execution:
Write high-quality, maintainable code in TypeScript/JavaScript using modern frameworks and libraries

Architect and implement scalable, performant web applications and APIs

Build and maintain robust integrations and data pipelines for complex business workflows

Ensure the performance, reliability, and security of your product area

Work hands-on with cloud services (preferably GCP) and modern infrastructure practices

Design and implement event-driven architectures and real-time systems

General Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership: Act as the go-to technical resource for your team; unblock engineers, review designs, and provide hands-on guidance during complex problem-solving

System Design and Architecture: Lead the design and implementation of scalable, reliable, and secure systems, while maintaining a focus on simplicity and maintainability

Problem-Solving: Tackle complex technical challenges across the stack, driving innovation and delivering efficient solutions

Mentorship: Guide and mentor engineers at junior and mid levels, helping them grow technically and build good engineering habits. Raise the team's overall technical capability over time

Collaboration: Partner with Product, Design, and other stakeholders to define and prioritize work, ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality features

Code Quality: Set and uphold high standards for code quality, testing, and software development practices

Cross-Team Initiatives: Contribute to cross-team technical initiatives alongside other Staff and Principal Engineers

What You'll Need:
Experience:
7+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on modern web development

Proven track record of leading technical delivery on complex, distributed systems in production environments

Experience as a tech lead or in a similar role where you drove technical direction for a team

Strong understanding of full-stack development principles and scalable system design

Experience with cloud platforms, preferably GCP

Experience building complex web applications and working with large datasets

Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new technologies

Experience with high-performance, scalable web applications

Technical Skills:
Strong proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript and modern web development ecosystem

Experience with modern build tools and development workflows (Webpack, Vite, etc.)

Strong understanding of API design and development (REST, GraphQL)

Experience with database systems and data modeling (SQL and NoSQL)

Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes)

Knowledge of distributed system patterns and microservices architecture

Leadership and Communication:
Comfortable driving technical direction without direct management authority

Strong communication skills with ability to translate technical concepts to diverse audiences

Ability to give direct, constructive feedback to peers and junior engineers

Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions

Proactive about surfacing risks, gaps, and opportunities rather than waiting to be asked

Ability to collaborate effectively with other Staff/Principal Engineers and teams across the organization

Bonus Points:
Previous startup or high-growth company experience

Previous Tech Lead or Staff+ positions

Previous logistics or supply chain experience

Experience with Order Management Systems (OMS), Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), or Transportation Management Systems (TMS)
