About the position

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is seeking a skilled and experienced Storage & Data Protection Platform Engineer to join the Infrastructure Services team. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the University's mission-critical enterprise platforms and infrastructure, ensuring high levels of performance, availability, and security across VCU's private cloud environment and expanding public and hybrid cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design, implementation, and management of scalable, reliable, and secure cloud infrastructure solutions.
  • ,
  • Design, implement, and maintain enterprise storage area network (SAN), network attached storage (NAS), and data protection platforms.
  • ,
  • Perform advanced system administration tasks, including installation, configuration, and maintenance of servers and storage appliances.
  • ,
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of automation scripts and tools to streamline operations.
  • ,
  • Implement monitoring solutions to proactively identify and resolve performance issues.
  • ,
  • Collaborate with the University Information Security team to support security policies and best practices.
  • ,
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of disaster recovery plans and procedures.
  • ,
  • Provide consultative and technical support to the user community.
  • ,
  • Build strong professional relationships with cross-functional teams to deliver integrated solutions.
  • ,
  • Maintain current knowledge on computer industry topics and provide training to team members.
  • ,
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for infrastructure configurations and processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • ,
  • 1-3 years of experience supporting enterprise data center storage and/or data protection technologies.
  • ,
  • Proficiency in provisioning, supporting, maintaining, and troubleshooting enterprise storage and data protection solutions.
  • ,
  • Familiarity with private cloud infrastructure platforms (e.g., VMware, OpenStack, Nutanix).
  • ,
  • Proficiency in Linux and/or Windows server administration.
  • ,
  • Strong scripting skills in languages such as Python, BASH, or PowerShell.
  • ,
  • Understanding of Ethernet and fibre channel networking concepts.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3-5 years of experience in a 24x7 enterprise data center environment.
  • ,
  • Experience with Cisco UCS and Dell PowerEdge hardware.
  • ,
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Distributed File System (DFS) environments.

  • Proficiency with network and data center log aggregation and monitoring solutions.
