Aurizon is seeking a highly capable Senior Adviser – Regulation and Safety Systems to support the delivery of our Safety Strategy and enterprise-wide safety obligations.

About the role:

This role will provide specialist expertise in safety legislation, regulation, accreditation, and safety management systems (SMS), enabling the business to maintain compliance, strengthen regulatory relationships, and continuously improve safety performance across the organisation.

You will play a critical role in delivering safety initiatives and supporting business transformation through a robust, risk-based and operationally aligned safety framework.

This role will see you:

Lead and deliver safety initiatives and safety streams within Business Unit projects, ensuring alignment with Aurizon’s Safety Management System (SMS) and safety approach

Continuously improve the SMS, developing risk-based, user-focused documentation that reflects work-as-done and meets regulatory requirements

Provide expert advice on safety legislation, regulatory frameworks, accreditation, and contractual safety obligations, driving enterprise-wide compliance

Manage regulatory interactions, including responses to queries, notifications, and audits, while building internal capability for local regulatory readiness

Build and maintain strong relationships with regulators, business leaders, workers, and unions to support a collaborative and proactive safety culture

Support change management for SMS and accreditation updates, including consultation and associated training impacts

About you: 

You are a safety and regulatory specialist with a strong understanding of rail safety frameworks and a passion for driving continuous improvement in safety systems.

Degree-level qualification in Law, Commerce, Safety, or a related discipline

Demonstrated experience in safety legislation, regulation, and accreditation, with specific knowledge of Rail Safety National Law (mandatory)

Proven experience delivering safety improvement initiatives and projects

Strong capability in developing and implementing Safety Management Systems

In-depth knowledge of safety risk management principles and practices

Advanced stakeholder engagement skills, including consultation, negotiation, coaching, and influencing

Ability to build trusted relationships with regulators, unions, and senior business leaders

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex requirements into practical outcomes
